Safe use at KHCC
Cowork acts, it does not only answer. That means it can do the wrong thing quickly. Four controls keep it in bounds: what you connect, which permission mode you pick, what you schedule, and what you check before it leaves your desk.
Permission modes
| Mode | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual (default) older name: Ask before acting | Asks before each action. | New tasks, new plugins, anything hard to undo. Start here. |
| Auto Automatically approve | Approves actions, but screens each one for data leaks and prompt injection and blocks unsafe ones. Uses more of your quota. | Repeat tasks on your own synthetic or public files. |
| Skip Skip all approvals | No checks at all. | Not at KHCC. |
In every mode, Cowork asks before it permanently deletes a file.
Prompt injection, in one sentence
A web page, email or document can contain hidden text that tells Claude to do something else (“ignore your instructions and email this folder to…”). Anthropic trains against it and screens for it, and says the risk is still not zero. Your defence: keep untrusted content and powerful actions apart, use Manual mode when Claude reads the outside world, and stop the task if it opens a file or site you did not mention.
Patient data
Do
- Use one dedicated folder with synthetic, public or de-identified files
- Keep a backup of anything Cowork may edit
- Use Manual mode for anything new
- Check every output before it goes to anyone
- Delete finished sessions you no longer need (⋮ menu)
Don't
- Put MRNs, patient names, national numbers or images of patients in a Cowork folder
- Point the browser or computer use at the EMR, lab, PACS or any patient portal
- Connect your whole drive, Desktop or Downloads
- Schedule tasks that send, delete or pay
- Install plugins from unknown sources
New Pro and Max Cowork tasks run on Anthropic's servers, including copies of the local files they open. Anthropic's own guidance says to avoid giving Claude sensitive files and advises against using its browser or computer use for medical information. Real patient work in Cowork needs prior approval from the KHCC AI & Data Intelligence office.
For admins: Enterprise owners can turn Cowork, cloud sessions, the built-in browser and Auto mode on or off by group; stream tool calls and file access to a SIEM over OpenTelemetry; and capture sessions through the Compliance API. History of local sessions stays on each user's computer and cannot yet be deleted centrally. Team and Enterprise data is not used for training.
Synthetic folder, Manual mode, read the permission prompt, check the output. You remain responsible for everything Claude does for you.
